Placeframe

An open-source Visual Positioning System (VPS) that anchors digital experiences to physical locations with high precision and multi-player localization.

Placeframe is the foundational infrastructure layer — free, open, and owned by no single entity.

Why we built a FOSS VPS

We build the neutral layer that de-risks the entire AR ecosystem

The Outernet Foundation builds and maintains a free, open-source virtual private server platform purpose-built for augmented reality developers. Like Linux did for servers, like Apache did for the web, the Outernet FOSS VPS is designed to be the trusted, vendor-neutral foundation the AR community can build on — without betting on any single corporation's roadmap.

Other AR platform companies have every incentive to maintain lock-in. A foundation that is mission-driven and community-centered is the only structure that can credibly commit to permanent openness. That commitment is the product.

The Outernet Foundation believes the $120B+ XR industry is stuck at the starting line. The fix isn't better hardware it's a free, open, vendor-neutral place for builders to build.

The gap between market projections and mass-market reality has persisted for over a decade. Revenue is concentrated in enterprise pilots, mobile filters, and gaming — not the rich spatial computing layer that was promised. The developer ecosystem is the missing link.

Every transformative platform of the last 30 years rode open infrastructure

The pattern is consistent across technologies: when the foundational infrastructure is open, the adjacent innovation market accelerates. When it's closed, growth stalls until the infrastructure opens or a dominant proprietary platform achieves sufficient scale to substitute.
