The Museum of Place

A collaborative museum project, honoring the history of the places humans inhabit. A metaphor for what The Outernet foundation aims for at every level: take what has been hidden in archives and databases, and bring it into the open air, visible, accessible, experiential, and shared.

We invite those who are interested to add to the map and bring in their historical records. On our free and open source VPS, scan your house, block, or city, and add genuine historical information to The Museum of Place — our collective, community open air museum.

We preserve and activate the history of places by making location-specific knowledge accessible, immersive, and alive. Information is not imposed indiscriminately, but made available in ways that respect both curiosity and privacy. We believe that technology can serve memory, culture, and learning without compromising its integrity. This particularly matters in a landscape crowded with tools that extract from rather than preserve places and the human experiences of them.
